FDA UPDATE: Investigation of Salmonella Montevideo outbreak continues

March 2, 2010 (NewYorkInjuryNews.com - Injury News, Product Liability)

238 people nationwide fell ill from Salmonella.

Legal news for Rhode Island product liability attorneys – Federal investigators continue to look into the national Salmonella outbreak.

Providence, RI (NewYorkinjuryNews.com) – The investigation of a national Salmonella outbreak, which has infected 238 people, continues as the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) attempt to determine and eradicate the root cause of the stain of bacteria.

The federal investigators continue to work with the Rhode Island Department of Health along with other states to look into the nationwide situation of Salmonella Montevideo infections that has been associated with Italian-style sausage products as well as peppered-salami. People who have been infected with the same strain of bacteria were in 44 of the 50 states as well as in the District of Columbia.

The CDC and other health authorities conducted a study to compare foods consumed by 41 sick people and 41 well people, which identified salami as a potential source of the bacteria. Since the investigation has begun, Daniele International Inc. has recalled certain meat products including their Hot Sopressata Calabrese and peppered salami. The FDA collected and analyzed 153 samples of black and red peppers found on the recalled meats.

The spices tested positive for Salmonella. Since the confirmation of the tests, Wholesome Spice, of Brooklyn, New York recalled their 25-pound boxes of red pepper, which was sold between April 2009 and January 2010.

If consumers experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain after the consumption of Italian sausage product, they should seek medical attention immediately.
