4 Tractor-Trailers, 2 Cars Crash in Northern Idaho—1 Dead, 2 Seriously Injured

Cocolalla, ID — A six-vehicle wreck, including four semi-trucks, killed one person and injured several others Saturday, January 21, 2012. The multiple-vehicle crash occurred on U.S. 95 near Cocolalla Creek around 8:40 a.m., reported the Coeur d’Alene Press.

Troopers with the Idaho State Police revealed that Zachary B. Henager, of Temple, Texas, was traveling southbound in the highway when he lost control of his 1994 Mazda Coupe. Henager then veered to the left of the centerline, where it hit a 2012 Mack semi-truck driven by Richard D. Walston, 58, of Colville, Wash., that was towing an empty flatbed trailer.

The impact of the crash pushed the Mazda into the south ditch of the highway, and caused Walston to lose control of the rig. The semi veered to the left of the centerline, into the southbound lanes, where it hit a 2005 Freightliner tractor-trailer head-on.

The trailer of the Mack truck, which was driven by James M. Mady, 49, of Creswell, Ore., overturned onto its side. The trailer was carrying a load of peat moss.

Another southbound 2004 Peterbilt semi-truck, driven by Brian M. Fendos, 39, of Bonners Ferry, saw Henager’s rig lose control and tried to avoid the wreck by veering off the southbound shoulder. Instead, Fendos hit a northbound 2005 Volvo semi-truck, which was towing a livestock trailer. The driver of the Volvo semi, Pavlo P. Shevchuk, 21, of Manitoba, Canada, lost control and ended up in the northbound ditch.

The driver of a 1991 Isuxu Trooper, Roger C. House, 45, of Post Falls, swerved to miss Shevchuk and also veered into the northbound ditch.

Troopers revealed that Mady did not survive the wreck.

Responding emergency crews airlifted Henager by MedStar helicopter to Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene, where he is in serious to critical condition. Walston was transported to Bonner General Hospital in Sandpoint and then transferred by MedStar helicopter to Sacred Hear Medical Center in Spokane, where he is in serious condition.

Fendos and Shevchuk did not sustain any injuries in the pile-up. House, nor his passenger, Nathan C. House, of Post Falls were not injured as well.

Investigations into the multiple-vehicle crash are underway.
