Lawyer SEO: You Get What You Pay For; Don’t Fall Victim to ‘Black Hat’ SEO Firms

(Lawyer SEO News) — Following the J.C. Penney and Overstock.com debacle, it should have become apparent that search engine optimization (SEO) companies can’t game Google, and its search engine algorithm, at least not for long. But apparently, a Sequoia Capital-backed Chinese startup, called Milanoo, didn’t get the memo, as they are now suspected of trying to do just that – game the search engine.

Lawyers should beware when hiring a lawyer SEO firm to ensure they don’t end up like these companies. Both invested thousands of dollars only to watch their rankings significantly diminish and listings seemingly disappear from Google’s search engine results pages (SERP). Mistakes like these can put their whole lawyer marketing website campaign in jeopardy.

According to Digital Due Diligence, an agency that provides investment research into online assets of companies, it is believed that Milanoo has been using “black hat” SEO tactics similar to J.C. Penney. In this case, Milanoo, is suspected of spamming Google with paid links that are helping them rank for things like dresses and evening gowns.

It became apparent that Milanoo was rigging its page rank, when the online retailer ranked higher than other major and more established retail brands. It is likely that Milanoo was paying for links to both its homepage and to Milanoo’s individual product pages, thus boosting Milanoo’s SERP ranking. Paying for links is considered deceptive practices to Google, and will likely land them on Google’s black list when the search engine catches on.

Law firms, don’t get reeled in by lawyer SEO companies that are promising top SEO results for a low price in too short of a time. Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. Sure, you could hire the inexpensive black hat SEO company and see results quickly, but over time Google will catch on and significantly lower your law firm website’s rankings, or even worse, take your lawyer website off its search engine altogether.

By taking a chance with a disreputable SEO company, who doesn’t have a positive track record, you’re putting your whole law firm website and lawyer Internet marketing campaign in severe jeopardy. Once Google identifies your lawyer website as a violator of its terms and conditions, a whole new strategy is needed to market your law firm website on the Web, costing your law firm even more money.

Here are the top 3 questions lawyers should ask an SEO company before hiring:

1. How long have you been in business? This will give an indication of how experienced they are, as well as an idea of how many happy clients they have.

2. Longevity? Check up on the lawyer SEO firm, just like you would do when hiring a new employee. Find out if their past clients were happy and if the SEO company in question was a good choice. Also, you should ask the lawyer SEO firm about their oldest client and if they have maintained and secured top rankings on the Internet; this will indicate whether the SEO firm has a strong and comprehensive lawyer SEO program.

3. How long will it take before I see results? If an SEO company tells you it only takes a matter or days, weeks or even a month or two, stay away! SEO campaigns for lawyers that utilize “white hat” SEO techniques are cultivated and nurtured over time. Top placement on SERPS takes several months, if not a year or more to achieve number high ranking in your legal field of practice. A short turnaround for results is an indicator that the SEO company may employ unscrupulous and uses “black hat” SEO tactics.

Attorneys need to remember: If it’s too good (or too cheap) to be true, it’s probably not. You likely won’t realize you have been screwed until its too late and your whole legal SEO campaign has been wasted.

Hiring an experienced law firm marketing company like CEPAC lawyer marketing, with a proven track record in creating and implementing top-notch SEO campaigns for lawyers, will help to eliminate the threat of Google unleashing its fury against your website.
