Santa Monica, CA—A student pilot, practicing touch-and-go landings and takeoffs, suffered fatal injuries when his aircraft went down in Venice, Calif. Thursday evening, June 1, 2010. The plane reportedly crashed on Penmar Golf Course, located in the direct path of planes departing from nearby Santa Monica Municipal Airport, as reported by the Contra Costa Times.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), 60-year-old Robert R. Davenport had just taken off from the airport when his single-engine Cessna 152 went down for unknown reasons. The scene of the aviation accident could be located on the Penmar Golf Course near the eighth hole.
Golfers who witnessed the unfortunate plane crash rushed to the wreckage to tend to any victims, but to no avail. The Department of Coroner sadly pronounced Davenport deceased at the scene. Davenport was the only person aboard the aircraft at the time. There were no injuries reported on the ground.
Steve Hagins, a regular at Penmar, expressed that he was astonished plane wrecks did not occur more frequently at the golf course. “They are full-powered… They are not at an altitude where they have any luxury of losing power… And if they do, they’re coming in,” he said.
“And if they come in, it is a miracle that they don’t hit one of these golfers. Just a couple blocks down the street is a park where there’s constantly kids playing basketball and baseball… This is something that has been overdue to happen for a long time, and I’m surprised that it doesn’t happen more often,” Hagins added.
Authorities from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to investigate the deadly plane wreck.
