Louisville, KY—GE front-load washing machines have been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and GE Appliances & Lighting due to a fire and shock hazard the machines pose. The CPSC announced the recall June 10, 2010.
The recall was prompted after finding a wire within the machine can break and make contact with a metal part of the washtub while the machine is operating. The washing machines pose a fire and shock hazard to consumers.
At this time GE knows of seven cases where flames escaped the machines and caused minor smoke damage. No injury-related incidents have been reported.
The CPSC stated, “This recall involves GE front-load washing machines without auxiliary water heating. Model and serial numbers are listed in the chart below. Recalled washing machines were manufactured between December 2006 and February 2010. The model and serial numbers are located on the bottom right side and on the bottom door frame of the washers.”
The washers involved in this recall includes:

The recalled washers were sold at department and various retail stores across the U.S. from December 2006 through May 2010. The washers sold for about $700.
Consumers are advised to stop using the washer immediately, unplug it from the electrical outlet an contact GE for a free repair. Do not operate the washer until it has been repaired.
