Lakeland, FL (News)—A Bartow man was arrested on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 after fleeing the scene of a crash that left a woman and her son critically injured. Polk County Sheriff’s Traffic deputies reported that the crash occurred on Tuesday around 7:45 p.m., along U.S. Highway 98, as reported by ABC Action News.
David Shapiro, Florida’s top Gulf Coast automobile accident lawyer reports, a red Dodge Ram and a GMC pickup truck were both traveling northbound on U.S. Hwy 98, when the two trucks appeared to have cut one another off. In doing so, both drivers exchanged words and/or gestures, before continuing to travel down the road in their respective lanes. Upon approaching Illinois Avenue, the GMC reportedly veered left, towards the Dodge, striking it two times. The driver of the Dodge subsequently lost control and drove into oncoming traffic, and into the path of a Ford Fusion. The truck and the car collided nearly head-on as a result, causing the car to veer off the road and into a ditch and overturn, landing on its roof.
The driver of the Ford, Amy Krupp, and her 10-year-old son, both sustained life-threatening injuries. Krupp was rushed to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition, while her son was taken to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. They both were reportedly wearing their seatbelts at the time.
Joshua Moore, the driver of the Dodge, sustained minor injuries and was taken to LRMC as well.
Richard Waters, the driver of the GMC, fled the scene after hitting the Dodge. Witnesses managed to take down his tag number, which was then turned over to PCSO traffic officers who were investigating the wreck. On Wednesday, officers located the truck in Bartow, which had damage matching the physical evidence left at the scene of the wreck. Walters was arrested, and admitted to driving he truck, to being at the scene when the crash occurred, and leaving the scene of the crash. Walters is being charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injuries. A full investigation is underway.
