Missouri Highway Patrol alerts-A Union Pacific freight train crashed into a car on the railroad crossing.
Trenton, MO—A Union Pacific freight train slammed into a car, after it pulled onto the tracks in front of the oncoming train. Three people were killed as a result of the train crash on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, around 10:48 a.m., on First Street in Trenton, as reported by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Missouri Highway Patrol reported, a 2002 Plymouth Neon driven by Nancy N. Groves, 24, drove her vehicle through the railroad crossing, which did not have a control arm to prevent drivers from crossing when a train is approaching. The Neon subsequently drove into the path of the oncoming freight train. The train engineer, Gerald Shrum, 44, of Omaha, desperately tried to stop the train before fatally hitting the car and pushing it 300 feet north before coming to a stop on the west side of the tracks. The Union Pacific Freight Train came to a stop 2,700 feet north of the point of impact. Groves, and her passengers Adam K. Romesburg, 30, and Nina A. Spencer, 28, all from Trenton were killed in the collision. It was reported that none of the passengers were wearing their seatbelts. Rescue teams freed the bodies from the heavily damaged vehicle, and transported them to the Whitaker-Eads Funeral Home in Trenton. Police officials are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the fatal train accident. It is unknown why the crossing did not have a control arm installed.
