South Africa – Many in South Africa and across the globe mourned the death of activist and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela on Thursday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), crowds gathered at the old Cape Town City Hall and other areas to pay tribute to Mandela, 95, who rose to prominence after becoming the first black South African president after serving 27 years in prison. He was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government.

Mandela’s government is known for focusing on dismantling the legacy of apartheid, a system of racial segregation in South Africa enforced from 1948 to 1994, the year he began his presidency.

Mbulelo Radebe, 37, is quoted by the AP as stating of Mandela, “He came here to Soweto as a lawyer and he led us. When he came out of jail in 1994, after 27 years, he did not come out a bitter man and encourage us to fight. No, he came out with a message of peace.”

Retired archbishop Desmond Tutu, is further quoted as releasing the statement, “He transcended race and class in his personal actions, through his warmth and through his willingness to listen and to empathize with others… He taught us that to respect those with whom we are politically or socially or culturally at odds is not a sign of weakness, but a mark of self-respect.”
