New York – A dying member of the “Angola Three” has been freed after spending 41 years in solitary confinement. As reported by Reuters, Herman Wallace, 71, who along with two other inmates was placed in solitary confinement for the killing of a Louisiana State Penitentiary guard in 1972, was released on Tuesday after a federal judge determined he did not receive a fair trial in 1974.
Wallace has advanced stage liver cancer. His attorney George H. Kendall, is quoted by Reuters as stating of his release, “There is great joy that he is going to be treated much, much better, whether for three days or for three months…But it’s a tragedy. I feel very badly. There’s only so much joy in this, to be perfectly honest.”
Wallace was taken to a hospice in New Orleans.
