Washington – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association has made his first public comments following the recent Washington Navy Yard shootings, saying that “there weren’t enough good guys with guns.” As reported by Yahoo! News, LaPierre made the comment in a “Meet the Press” interview on NBC on Sunday.
LaPierre is further quoted as stating during the interview, “This is a tragedy that should not have happened, a memorial service that should not be taking place, and victims that should not be victims… In a post-9/11 world, a naval base within miles from Congress, the White House, seven miles from here, largely left unprotected. A terrorist target, a high-value terrorist target completely unprotected. That can’t stand. [The] N.R.A. is calling today for layers of security around our military bases.”
Twelve people were killed in the shooting by suspected gunman Aaron Alexis last week. Alexis was subsequently killed by law enforcement, which ended the massacre.
