St. Clairsville, OH—A Belmont County motor vehicle collision (MVC) Saturday, October 23, 2010, resulted in one fatality and left four others seriously injured. The two-vehicle accident occurred along Nation Road, located west of Ohio University Eastern, as reported by the Intelligencer.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Brian McFarland, 35-year-old Lisa Stanton was operating a Ford Edge crossover SUV in the northbound lanes of Belmont County Road 84 when the wreck occurred.
Stanton apparently failed to yield to a Toyota Camry that was traveling westbound on U.S. 40, consequently crashing into it. Paul Bartley, 73, was behind the wheel of the Camry at the time.
While both the Ford and Toyota veered off the north of National Road on impact, the Camry went on to careen down an embankment.
Emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, along with three Stat MedEvac helicopters, arrived at the scene to transport those injured to area hospitals for treatment.
Five people, including Bartley, occupied the Camry at the time. The crash victims were identified as 45-year-old Aaron Buckles, 66-year-old Rosetta Buckles, 72-year-old Doris Bartley and 88-year-old Ruth Shipley.
Shipley was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital where her traumatic injuries sadly proved fatal. The three remaining passengers were also taken to UPMC Presbyterian to be treated for serious injuries. A fourth victim was taken to Wheeling Medical Park for treatment as well.
Shanton was reportedly rushed to Ohio Valley Medical Center. She has since been released.
McFarland alleged an investigation into the fatal motor vehicle collision was expected to be underway. No charges have been filed as of yet.
