North Miami, FL—A teenage girl was rushed to an area hospital after a vehicle struck her twice before speeding away Wednesday, October 6, 2010. According to a Just News report, an unknown bystander opened fire at the hit-and-run vehicle as it fled the scene of the accident, which occurred outside Miami Norland Senior High School.
Reports indicated a group of people were standing outside Miami Norland Senior High when a red Pontiac careened into the area, consequently running over 17-year-old Danisha Williams.
The vehicle then apparently Williams a second time, dragging her down the street before managing to speed away.
Gunshots were allegedly heard right after the pedestrian-involved traffic accident occurred. However, police are unaware who fired the shots.
Emergency personnel rushed Williams to Jackson Memorial Hospital via medical helicopter. As of Wednesday night, Williams was reportedly listed in stable condition. The extent of her injuries was unknown.
While officials discovered the abandoned hit-and-run car in close proximity to the crash scene, they have yet to find the driver.
Witnesses or any individuals with information concerning the injurious traffic accident have been urged to contact police.
According to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) Encyclopedia, there were 4,414 pedestrian fatalities reported in the U.S. during the year 2008.
In the state of Florida alone, 490 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents during the same year. Florida has the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the country.
