Butler County, OH—The driver of a 2002 Toyota Camry crashed her vehicle through the entrance of a Liberty Township bank while attempting to pull into in a handicapped parking spot Tuesday, August 3, 2010. The female motorist and an elderly passenger in her car were hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries after the accident, according to information provided by the Middletown Journal.
Reports indicated 51-year-old Dale Konnegan was trying to park outside Emery Federal Credit Union when she slammed her Toyota through the front doors of the bank for unknown reasons.
Mary Northman, who was in the bank with her daughter Jennifer Harkins, witnessed the horrific crash. “It could have been so much worse. That car could have come through the bank and killed us all… She (Jennifer) was right there at the door. She could have been killed… It was a horrible sound. It could have killed my daughter,” Northman said.
Mary-Elizabeth Gower, Northman’s other daughter, was waiting in a car with Harkins’ two sons when the accident occurred. “Her children were in the car. They could have seen her killed,” Northman added.
Gower apparently ran over to the damaged Toyota after it crashed into the bank to assist the driver and her passenger. She noted that wile Konnegan seemed “terrified,” she did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.
Liberty Twp. fire crews treated Konnegan at the scene and then took her, as well as her passenger, to West Chester Medical Center. Both of the wrecked vehicle’s occupants have since been released from the hospital.
Officials from the sheriff’s office did not seem to believe a mechanical defect contributed to the accident. Investigations are underway.
