FDA announcement: Specialty Farms LLC recalls organic sprouts products

07/26/2010 // West Palm Beach, FL, USA // Tara Monks // Tara Monks

Bridgeport, CT – On July 23, 2010, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall that was made by Specialty-Farms, LLC for Specialty Farms brand Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Blend and Organic Sprout Salad. The two products have a sell-by date of 7/26/2010, and have a net weight of 4 oz.

The products are as follows:

Specialty Farms Organic Alfalfa Sprouts Blend, UPC code: 8192400108

Specialty Farms Organic Sprout Salad, UPC code: 8192400024

The products are being recalled due to a possible contamination of Listeria Monocytogenes. Listeria Monocytogenes is an organism that may cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people or those with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and high fever.

Specialty-Farms, LLC voluntarily recalled the sprouts on July 23, 2010 after laboratory analysis found a positive result for Listeria Monocytogenes in one retail sample.

Products dated after 7/26/2010 are not included in the recall.

The following retailers and distributors sold the recalled sprouts:

Price Chopper (retailer)

Cooseman’s NY (Distributor)

The sprouts were distributed in New York, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Pennsylvania.

Specialty-Farms LLC is working to determine where the potential contamination could be occurring in its facility. It reported it will immediately remedy the potential sources as they are identified.

Consumers who purchased the product are urged to return the packages to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers may also contact Specialty-Farms, LLC with questions at (203) 366-6919, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., ET.
