Coral Gables, FL—A woman who suffered painful burns to her underarms after undergoing a botched laser hair removal treatment filed a suit against the unlicensed practitioner who performed the procedure. The victim initially complained to the Florida Department of Health, who upon investigating the so-called doctor, found he did not have a license. The case was then turned over to authorities at the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), who arrested the phony practitioner last week, according to a Tuesday, June 29, 2010 WSVN-TV report.
“It’s very painful even to touch, to shave over. Just because I had the laser doesn’t mean all of my hair is gone. It grows back just like normal… so I have to be careful. It’s very painful,” the 22-year-old plaintiff Monica Jimenez said.
Jimenez made an appointment to undergo a laser hair removal treatment at 3621 SW 107 Avenue on August 5, 2009. She could have never expected she would leave “practitioner” Larry DeJesus’ office with second and third degree burns.
According to Jimenez, “I was injured and I was like, ‘What are you doing? You don’t know what you’re doing. You hurt me,’ and all that stuff. He actually told me, ‘I’m a doctor, I know what I’m doing,’ so, that’s when I was like, ‘No, obviously you don’t.”
Jimenez even noted that after the procedure was finish, DeJesus allegedly urged her to purchase a burn ointment from a Walgreens store near the office. She apparently filed a complaint with the State Department of Health after her laser-induced wounds worsened.
Miami-Dade Police apprehended DeJesus after learning that he fraudulently performed laser hair removal procedures without a proper license. DeJesus now faces pending litigation with regard to his deceptive practices.
“The fact is that he did this to me, and he needs to pay the price. He wasn’t licensed, you know, he wasn’t a real doctor, and it could’ve happened to anybody,” Jimenez contended.
The personal injury lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages. Also, Miami-Dade Police are advising any other victims to come forward by contacting Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
