Petaluma, CA—An employee at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair lost his leg when he was hit by a small roller coaster on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. The accident occurred around 2:20 p.m., less than 30 minutes into the opening day of the fair in Petaluma, as reported by KTVU.
Officials reported that the accident occurred when the fair employee walked in front of “The Wacky Worm,” a small children’s roller coaster. The employee’s leg was severed just below the knee as a result.
Witnesses said the employee was trying to get to the other side of the ride, when he didn’t make it in time before the roller coaster reached him. According to the Press Democrat, a Rohnert Park woman was riding the roller coaster in the first six compartments, when she saw the employee standing on the track, with his back to the moving ride and a soda in his hands. The ride struck him and he fell underneath the ride, where the ride continued to “rock back and forth above him.” Officials are still trying to sort out the details of the accident.
The employee was transported by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he was rushed into surgery. He is expected to survive.
Cal/OSHA officials are investigating the accident. The ride has since been shut down.
