Albuquerque, N.M—A student who was riding his bicycle from Pennsylvania to California to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research, never saw the finish line. The 19-year-old was hit and killed by an SUV in New Mexico on Monday, June 21, 2010, as reported by KOAT.
John Anczarski, 19, of Ringtown, Pa. was riding with a group of cyclists on the Laguna Pueblo, when a man driving a red SUV hit Anczarski. The motorist appeared to be traveling at around 55 mph, when he hit Anczarski.
The cyclists were all wearing yellow jerseys and had blinking LED lights on their bikes.
Anczarski was rushed to University New Mexico hospital for treatment of his life-threatening injuries. He was placed on life support, but tragically he passed away late Tuesday night.
Police officials turned the investigation over to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, because the fatal accident occurred on tribal land. No charges have been pressed against the driver at this time.
Anczarski and three friends organized the awareness and fundraising campaign, “The Pink Pedal”. They reportedly raised several thousand dollars for cancer research. They departed from Pennsylvania on May 23, and were scheduled to arrive in San Diego next month. The group said they would not continue the trek to California without their dear friend.
