Detroit, MI—General Motors announced an automotive recall, which will affect approximately 1.5 million 2006 to 2009 model year cars and trucks, on Tuesday, June 8, 2010. A defect in the affected vehicles’ heated washer-fluid system could cause a fire to be ignited, according to information provided by the New York Times.
Reports indicated the heated washer-fluid systems could short circuit, subsequently leaving consumers susceptible to a fire hazard.
Two-thirds of the vehicles involved in this recall were also subject to a recall two years ago… for the same issue. However, GM apparently “received reports of overheating in modules that had new wiring installed under that recall”.
While repairs will be done to prevent further risks, the feature itself will be lost. As a means of compensating owners for the lost heated washer-fluid systems, GM will pay those affected $100.
According to GM’s executive director of safety, Jeff Boyer, “This was a unique technology available from only one supplier, and that supplier has stopped manufacturing, which left no opportunity to collaborate on an improved design… We want to be clear that the voluntary payment to customers is for the loss of the feature, not the recall.”
Vehicles affected by the automotive recall include the following:
• Buick Lucerne (2006-09)
• Cadillac DTS (2006-09)
• Hummer H2 (2006-09)
• Cadillac Escalade (2007-09)
• Chevrolet Avalanche (2007-09)
• Chevrolet Silverado (2007-09)
• Chevrolet Suburban (2007-09)
• Chevrolet Tahoe (2007-09)
• GMC Acadia (2007-09)
• GMC Sierra (2007-09)
• GMC Yukon (2007-09)
• Saturn Outlook (2007-09)
• Buick Enclave (2008-09)
• Cadillac CTS (2008-09)
• Chevrolet Traverse (2009)
Consumers will receive formal notification of the recall within the month, though owners may begin contacting their dealerships to schedule repairs immediately.
GM has reportedly learned of five instances in which the flaw resulted in a blaze. No injuries or crashes have been reported in connection with the recall.
