Chicago, IL—Five people were taken to the hospital after an unruly driver smashed into the back of another vehicle at approximately 1:52 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010. The deadly motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred in a South Lawndale, otherwise known as the Little Village, neighborhood, according to information provided by the Chicago Tribune.
Reports stated an unidentified 36-year-old motorist was driving a Nissan Quest van when he sped through several stop signs, eventually rear-ending a Kia. The Nissan was apparently traveling at an excessively high rate of speed when it struck the car. On impact, the Kia was sent careening around until it rammed into another parked vehicle. The motor vehicle accident occurred in the 3500 block of West 30th Street, according to Chicago Police Lt. Ken Sahnas.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to transport those injured in the wreck to area hospitals. A woman in her late 40s, informally identified as Alicia Pedroza, was initially taken to Stroger Hospital. Pedroza, who was the alleged driver of the Kia, sadly succumbed to her injuries at 2:26 p.m.
An unidentified male passenger in the Kia, believed to be Pedroza’s son, was also taken to Stroger. That passenger was originally transported to the medical center in critical condition but eventually upgraded to serious condition. Two other passengers in the Kia, were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment. Those victims, identified as 47-year-old Santa Sierra and 10-month-old Luis Armando Ramirez, were listed in fair condition.
The unidentified Nissan driver was not given permission to drive the van and seemingly failed to cooperate with authorities after the crash. Police reportedly Tased and subdued the man before he could be taken to Mount Sinai for treatment as well.
It was not stated if any charges have been filed as of yet. Investigations in the fatal accident are expected to be underway.
