Louisville, KY—A two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance and a car left four people, including two emergency medical services (EMS) paramedics, with serious injuries on Wednesday night, March 17, 2010. The motor vehicle collision (MVC) occurred at approximately 11 p.m. in Jefferson County, according to information provided by Wave3.com.
Reports stated a Rural Metro Ambulance, transporting a previously injured or ill patient, was en route to an area hospital at the same time as a silver Camry allegedly sped through a red traffic light at the junction of Taylorsville Road and Furman Boulevard. The ambulance, which was driving through the intersection as well, was violently struck by the Camry.
Separate EMS crews seemingly responded to the scene to transport the injured victims, including the Camry driver, two paramedics and a patient who was riding in the emergency vehicle at the time, to area hospitals to be treated by medical professionals. Responding authorities did not disclosed the victims’ identities, though they all apparently suffered serious though non-life threatening injuries in the collision. The ambulance reportedly had its lights and sirens on at the time.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 300 fatal crashes involving ambulances from 1991 through 2000, resulting in fatal injuries for 82 people occupying the ambulances at the time.
