U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerts product liability lawyers- Red Darla cheese recalled because of Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Montesano, WA—Due to the possibility of Listeria monocytogenes contamination, the Estrella Family Creamery had recalled its Red Darla cheese. The product recall was announced on Thursday, February 11, 2010, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) http://www.fda.gov/.
The Red Darla cheese was sold at Ballard and Seattle’s U-District farmer’s markets, two Seattle restaurants, retail stores in the Seattle-Tacoma area, and the firm’s retail store in Montesano, Washington; a retail market in San Francisco, California; and a cheese shop in Springfield, New Jersey from January 2010 through February 11, 2010. The Red Darla is a soft cheese, ¾ wheel, made of cow milk and washed in red wine while aging, and does not contain a lot code. At this time there have been no reports of illnesses connected with this product. The Washington Department of Agriculture (WSDA) discovered the contamination during a routine sampling program, when they found a cheese wheel that contained the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. At this time the Estrella Family Creamery has stopped all production and distribution of the recalled product while the FDA, WSDA, and the manufacturer investigate the source of the contamination.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and often fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems; it can even cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Infections can cause symptoms like high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pan and diarrhea.
