GM recalls 2005-07 Chevrolet Corvettes due to the safety hazard they pose.
Detroit, MI—General Motors Co. announced the recall of 22,000 Chevrolet Corvettes on Monday, December 28, 2009, reports the Detroit News. This voluntary recall will affect 2005-07 model year Corvettes and the Corvette Z06 models, due to a potential hazard in which the roof could become detached from the vehicle.
This is not the first time GM has had an issue regarding the durability of the adhesive used to hold the roof panel and the frame together. In May 2006, GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) http://www.nhtsa.gov that it was recalling 30,793 2005-06 Corvettes due to a risk in which the adhesive between the roof and frame could possibly come loose under hot and humid conditions. GM allegedly received approximately 11 reports of roof separations prior to the first recall. GM “fixed” the problem by adding adhesive foam and replacing the roof if necessary.
GM looked into it’s U.S. warranty claims data after Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) allegedly questioned GM concerning a Corvette roof repaired after the initial recall in 2006. In doing so, GM found that 108 instances in which Corvette roofs were detaching from the frame of the vehicle were reported after the additional adhesive was added as a result of the first recall. Allegedly, no injuries were reported as a result of these product malfunctions.
GM will reportedly notify all Corvette owners being affected by the recall in the month of January, so they may have their roofs replaced. Consumers who already had their cars’ roof replaced will allegedly receive compensation.
In addition to the recall of the affected Corvettes, GM also announced that 59,000 2010 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles were recalled due to possibly defective software in the center instrument panel that could consequently cause heating, air conditioning, defrost, radio controls, and the panel illumination to cease functionality.
