West Palm Beach, FL—The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) http://www.faa.gov announced that it will be investigating American Airlines (AA) after three botched landings in the month of December, according to information provided by CNN News. The FAA announced the review to the public on Friday, January 1, 2010.
Between December 13 and December 24, a total of three American Airlines aircraft’s underwent unsuccessful landings, subsequently provoking the FAA to increase supervision on the commercial airline as a means of determining whether these landings are the result of a presently unknown problem.
When an MD-80 aircraft attempted to land at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina on December 13, it veered off the left side of the runway upon touch down. The plane’s right wingtip touched the ground as it was making its way back to the runway.
Ninety-one people were injured when a Boeing 737 aircraft overran the runway at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, Jamaica, on December 22. Rainy weather may have played a role in the incident.
An MD-80 also reportedly struck a wingtip when it landed in Austin, Texas from Chicago, Illinois December 24.
A spokesman from the FAA reportedly stated that, in the event that a particular airline should experience several accidents, such as repeated botched landings, over a brief time period, the FAA generally increases scrutiny of the airline. American Airlines representatives allegedly stated that the airline is cooperating with FAA investigators.
