Ohio Semi-truck accident attorneys alerts-Chevrolet Impala slams into a semi-truck carrying organic peroxide.
Ashland, OH—Three people were injured, and nearly a dozen homes were evacuated after a tractor-trailer containing 34,000 pounds of highly concentrated organic peroxide rolled over. The 18-wheeler wreck happened on Saturday, September 26, 2009 around 11:30 a.m., on Ohio 58 and County Road 40, as reported by the Ashland Times-Gazette.
According to police officials a 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by Deanne R. King, 50, of Elyria was traveling westbound on County Road 40, and ran a stop sign at the intersection of Ohio 58. The Chevy Impala then hit a semi-truck, who traveling southbound on Ohio 58. The Impala reportedly hit the fuel tank of the tractor-trailer, which caused the tractor-trailer to strike a slight embankment on the soft ground alongside the road, and overturned onto its side. The Impala spun out into a ditch on the southeast side of the intersection. King and her daughter, Sydney A. King, 14, were trapped inside the wrecked car, and were extracted by rescue teams who used hydraulic cutting equipment. Both King and her daughter were transported by Sullivan Emergency Squad to Lodi Community Hospital for treatment of their injuries. King was later transported by Sullivan Emergency Squad to Akron General Hospital. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Scott R. Littleton, 54, of Elyria, was transported by Wellington Emergency Squad to Lodi Community Hospital, where he was treated and released. Everyone involved in the crash were reportedly wearing his or her seatbelts at the time of the wreck.
The semi-truck was apparently transporting a mixed load of liquid and dry organic peroxide when the crash occurred. Residents living within an 800-foot radius of the crash scene were evacuated as a safety measure until HAZMAT teams could determine if any of the peroxide was leaking. A fuel spill also resulted from the wreck, but officials estimated the spill was less than 50 gallons. Police officials are reportedly conducting a full investigation into the two-vehicle collision. Fire Departments from Ashland, Lorain, and Median counties all responded to the rollover. The Sheriff’s Office and the Highway Patrol also responded to the wreck.
