Fort Myers, FL–A three-vehicle automobile accident claimed one man’s life and injured a police officer in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday, July 23. The Naples News reported the motor vehicle collision (MVC) happened on Palm Beach Boulevard. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) state troopers said the SUV crash took place at approximately 2:51 p.m. Lee County Sheriff’s Office officials say Mateo F. Matias Mateo was killed when his vehicle was hit by an on-duty patrol SUV. The 61 year-old Fort Myers resident was preparing his silver 2000 Honda Civic for a U-turn onto westbound Palm Beach Boulevard and was struck by a 2007 Ford Explorer SUV patrol car. Mateo’s car then swayed into a black 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by 52 year-old Miguel Colon of Cape Coral. The driver of the SUV, 37 year-old Detective Timothy Galloway of Fort Myers, was on a high-speed chase to catch a couple of burglars.

The driver of the Honda, Mateo, was pronounced dead at the accident scene by the FHP. The detective, Galloway, sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital by Lee County area emergency medical services (EMS) crew. After receiving treatment from doctors and nurses, Galloway was released from the hospital. Colon, the driver of the pickup truck, was reportedly uninjured. It has not been confirmed whether the deputy had his sirens and police lights activated. Fort Myers area roadway accident investigators state Galloway had his sirens and police lights turned on. However, some witnesses around the crash scene say Galloway’s police lights were activated, but his sirens were not. Police officials continue to investigate the pickup truck wreck.
