San Francisco, CA — A Muni bus fatally struck a 71-year-old pedestrian Sunday, November 13, 2011, as the man was crossing the street. The fatal pedestrian accident occurred at Fifth and Mission Streets around 12:20 p.m., reported the San Francisco Examiner.

The 14-Mission Muni coach was pulling away from its stop at Fifth and Mission, when the pedestrian apparently “got caught up in the middle” while trying to cross the street, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency stated.

The San Francisco Chronicle identified the victim as Manuel Tomaneng, 71, who had worked as a security guard at San Francisco International Airport.

Tomaneng reportedly walked in front of the westbound 14L-Mission bus when two sets of tires rolled over his legs, leaving his right leg pinned underneath the tire. It is unknown if Tomaneng was crossing in the street or if he was in the crosswalk.

Responding rescue crews had to use wooden planks to raise the bus, in order to free the man.

Tomaneng was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Muni bus driver has since been placed on non-driving status, pending the completion of the investigation.

Investigations are underway.
