3 Dead, 2 Injured, 3 Missing in Kentucky Grain Bin Explosion

Atchison, KY — Three people are dead, two people are injured and three others are unaccounted for following a violent grain elevator explosion in northeastern Kansas Sunday, October 30, 2011. The explosion occurred around 7 p.m., at Bartlett Grain Company, and was so intense that people felt it three miles away, reported CNN.

According to reports, three people were killed and two others were rushed to an area hospital for treatment of burn injuries. Three others still remain missing.

USA Today identified the deceased workers were identified as Chad Roberts, 20; Ryan Federinko, 21; and John Burke, 24.

The workers were reportedly loading a train with corn when the blast occurred.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time, but stored grain can create toxic gases that could ignite explosions under certain conditions.

The three missing workers—a worker and two grain inspectors—are presumed dead at this time, but search and rescue efforts are continuing on Monday, reported USA Today.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation.
