CPSC: Hand Trucks by Harper Trucks Recalled; 19 Injuries Reported

Wichita, KS — Hand Trucks by Harper Trucks Inc. are being voluntarily recalled for injury hazards the defective product poses to consumers. Harper Trucks, along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), announced the nationwide recall on October 27, 2011.

The product recall was issued after discovering that when the tires are overinflated, they can explode and cause the wheel hub to separate or break. This causes pieces of the hub to be ejected, which poses an injury hazard to bystanders.

Nineteen injuries have been reported as a result of the tires exploding, including in a broken bone, loss of sight in one eye, contusions and lacerations.

The CPSC reported, “This recall involves Harper Trucks hand trucks with model numbers and type of wheels listed below. ‘Harper Truck’ and the model number can be found on an adhesive sticker on the hand truck frame’s cross member. Hand trucks with two-piece, grey metal wheels are not included in this recall,”

The hand trucks were sold for between $28 and $42 at Home Depot and Sam’s Clubs.
