Jersey City, NJ — A single-vehicle accident injured five Jersey City females, two of them seriously, Sunday morning, October 2, 2011, when their SUV slammed into a utility pole. The SUV accident took place around 5:30 a.m. at Kennedy Boulevard and Culver Avenue in Jersey City, reported the NJ.com.

Police reported that the driver of the Jeep Cherokee, 21-year-old Thomas T. Rice, of Woodlawn Avenue, fled the scene in the damaged SUV. Police later arrested him at his home and charged him with the second-degree crime of knowingly leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries.

According to witnesses, the SUV swerved and then crashed into the utility pole.

All five injured teens, whose ages ranged from 15 to 19, suffered head injuries in the wreck, reported NJ.com. They were all rushed to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

As of 3 p.m. Sunday, three of the victims had been treated and released from the hospital. The two remaining teens were admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment of their serious injuries.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Forrest Street resident, who was riding in the front seat. The back seat passengers were identified as a 19-year-old Communipaw Avenue resident, a 17-year-old Forrest Street resident, a 15-year-old of Wayne Street resident, and a 17-year-old Montgomery Street resident.

Rice told officers that he left the scene of the accident because his license was suspended. The damaged Jeep was located outside of Rice’s home.

Police have cited driver inattention and speed as factors in the wreck.

Investigations are underway.
