Salt Lake City Oil Spill: 33,000 gallons of oil spilled, Chevron begins clean-up

Salt Lake City, UT— About 33,000 gallons of oil have spilled into the Red Butte Creek and the Jordan River from to a leaky pipeline. Chevron says the leak began on Saturday, June 12, 2010, as reported by KSTU.

As of Sunday, the leak was stopped and the pipeline has been capped, keeping the crude petroleum from continuing to spill into the delicate eco-system. The oil reportedly began to accumulate in the Red Butte Creak, which then spread to Liberty Park and the Jordan River. Environmentalists also say they have tracked the leak to the Salt Lake-Davis County line.

Chevron is reportedly taking “full responsibility” and has begun clean-up efforts. Chevron has also started to excavate the pipeline to determine the cause of the leak.

Anyone who has been impacted by the oil spill are being urged by city officials not to begin cleaning up the oil on their own. Instead, citizens should file a claim with Chevron and have them fix the problem. Any contact with the oil can irritate the skin, and the fumes can sicken some people. Complaints and concerns can be directed to a hotline set up by Chevron at 1-866-752-6340.

A full investigation into the oil spill has been launched by federal investigators.
