Product liability attorney alerts- FDA to investigate possible salmonella contamination that prompted product recall.

Indianapolis, IN (News)—Heartland Foods, Inc. has participated in the voluntary recall of Coarse Ground Black Pepper due to a possible salmonella contamination threat to consumers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) http://www.fda.gov announced the product recall on Monday, March 1, 2010.

Heartland Foods, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, recalled all sizes and containers carrying Coarse Ground Black Pepper, distributed from the company’s facility, located at 6815 E. 34th Street. Products shipped from the company facility from October 19, 2009 to February 17, 2010, could have been contaminated with salmonella, posing a serious health threat to younger children, elderly individuals, as well as people with weakened immune systems. It was not stated whether or not the firm received any reports of illnesses in connection with the recalled product. According to the FDA, “Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

The containers of Coarse Ground Black Pepper affected by the product recall include, “1 lb Quart (jar), 4 lb Gallon, 8 lb Bucket (new pail)”. The Heartland Foods logo, product description and product weight are all included on the labeling of the containers. Distribution of the product has come to a halt pending further investigation by the FDA. Consumers have been urged to stop using the Coarse Ground Black Pepper and return the product for a full reimbursement. Heartland Foods, Inc. may be contacted at (800) 767-6909 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, in regards to the product recall.
