N.J. female inmate sues over delayed treatment of breast cancer

Legal news for New Jersey Personal Injury attorneys– Costa Rican woman inmate had breast cancer and could not get medical treatment until she needed a mastectomy.

Newark, NJ (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A female inmate was denied medical testing for ten months while she suffered from an untreated lump in her breast, according the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Costa Rican woman who was arrested for murder by the international police in Long Island, in April 2008, was placed in the Hudson County Correctional Center, where she pleaded with medical officials that she had a lump in her breast and she needed testing. The 39-year-old woman identified as, Maria Magdalena Pacheco Bolanos, was not granted access to a doctor for ten months of being detained, said her attorney.

Bolanos sued over the lack of access to health services until her breast cancer was so advanced that she needed a mastectomy. Bolanos lawyer stated that she had fled Costa Rica to Long Island, where she had a successful landscaping company and a home with her three children. An immigration judge had made a formal order that Bolanos be treated by a doctor.

She was taken in and received a diagnosis and a mastectomy to remove one of her breasts. The case was filed Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in federal Court in Newark, New Jersey.
