California personal injury attorneys alerts- A San Francisco Municipal Railway cable car suddenly stopped and injured four people.
San Francisco, CA– Four people were injured while riding on a San Francisco Municipal Railway (SF Muni) cable car on Saturday afternoon, November 21, 2009. The four people were injured when the cable car stopped suddenly and tossed the passengers around the car in downtown San Francisco around 1:00 p.m., as reported by the san Francisco chronicle.
The cable cars gripman and the conductor, along with two other passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries when the cable car suddenly stopped on the Powell Street line. A strand apparently started to detach from the underground cable, which is used to propel the cars up and down their routes in the San Francisco hills. The cable cars reportedly only travel at a consistent 9.5 mph. According to preliminary reports, the cable car operator was unable to release the grip from the partially torn cable, when the operators contacted central control to shut down the system automatically. The cable car was reportedly headed to Fisherman’s Wharf when the incident occurred. It is unknown if the injured people were transported to area hospitals for medical attention. Other cable lines were not affected. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
