Manhattan, NY (New York Injury News ) – Many of the details regarding the death of an e-bike rider who died after striking a pole on 2nd Avenue near East 89th Street early Monday morning have not been released. We do know, however, that the e-bike rider was in a southbound dedicated bike lane immediately before the crash.
Throttle controlled e-bikes can travel as fast 25 -30 miles per hour without the operator having to pedal. The speed limit for vehicles (as well as bicycles) on Second Avenue is only 25 miles per hour.
Although we do not yet know what caused this horrific crash, whether it was operator error or if there was something (or someone) in the road that this e-bike rider tried to avoid, it is so important to wear a proper bike helmet and have a bell and lights on all bicycles. E-bikes are a great way to get around and a great assist for delivery workers. Operators of e-bikes, as well as regular bicycles, and operators of all micro-mobility devices such as e-scooters, need to take the proper safety precautions to protect themselves.
