Texas – A middle school principal has been accused of banning students from speaking Spanish. As reported by Yahoo! News, the actions of Hempstead Middle School principal, Amy Lacey are being investigated following complaints by students that she informed students via the public address system used in the school that they were prohibited from speaking Spanish to avoid class disruptions.

David Hinojosa of the Mexican American Legal and Educational Fund (MALDEF) is quoted as stating of the rights of the students in a letter written to the district last month, “The anti-Spanish policy also invites potential challenges under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects ‘pure speech’ of prisoners, employees and, of course, students.”

Hempstead eight-grader Tiffani Resurez is quoted as stating to KHOU 11 News, “There’s this one teacher that she told us, ‘If you speak Spanish in my class, I’m going to write you up.”

The Hempstead Independent School District has denied that it has banned students from speaking Spanish. Superintendent Delma Flores-Smith reportedly sent a note home with students following the complaints on December 2, stating, “Neither the district or any campus has any policy prohibiting the speaking of Spanish.” The district is reportedly investigating the announcement made over the loud speaker.
