Sacramento, CA – Black students have been admitted to the University of California at lower rates since the implementation of a state ban on race being considered as a factor in public college admissions, according to a new report. As reported by Reuters, the education policy group Campaign for College Opportunity’s report also showed African-American students to have a lower likelihood of graduating from the public colleges and universities in California than other ethnic groups.
The findings note that from 1994-2010 the percentage of African American applicants admitted to the university system declined from 75 percent to 58 percent. The study comes amid an ongoing national debate about affirmative action in the United States.
Michele Siqueiros, the group’s president, is quoted by Reuters as writing in the report, “The persistent disparities between black students and their counterparts should sound an alarm for Californians and our elected leaders to make a concerted effort to systematically narrow and close these gaps…To do otherwise is to accept a society of ‘haves and have nots.”
