New Hampshire – A New Hampshire hospital worker has been sentenced to 39 years for infecting several patients with hepatitis C. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), David Kwiatkowski, 34, who worked as a traveling medical technician, infected patients in four states using tainted syringes.

Kwiatkowski entered a guilty plea in August to multiple counts of federal drug charges. He admitted to replacing stolen painkillers with syringes he tainted with his blood.

Kwiatkowski is quoted by the AP as stating during a sentencing hearing, after hearing statements from victims he infected and their family members, “I don’t blame the families for hating me… I hate myself.”

Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that can lead to liver disease and other health problems.

Linda Ficken, 71, one of the victims who was present at the hearing, is quoted as stating to Kwiatkowski, “On one hand, you were saving my life, and on the other hand, your acts are a death sentence for me… Do I thank you for what you did to help me? Do I despise you for what your actions did and will continue to do for the rest of my life? Or do I simply just feel sorry for you being the pathetic individual you are?”
