New Orleans – A former BP engineer will head to trial after being accused of deliberately deleting text messages and voicemails related to BP’s 2010 Gulf oil spill response. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a jury is scheduled to hear arguments in a case brought by the Justice Department against, Kurt Mix, who has been charged with obstruction of justice.

Mix, a former drilling engineer for the company, is one of four people who are currently or were previously employed by BP that have been charged with crimes linked to the massive spill.

Prosecutors are quoted as writing in a court filing of Mix, “The timing of these deletions provides compelling evidence of (Mix’s) corrupt intent to prevent the discovery of his text messages with the Supervisor and Contractor.”

Mix’s attorneys countered referring to the texts as being “patently innocuous.”

Jury selection in the case was set to begin on Monday.
