Phoenix – A judge has banned live television coverage of the penalty phase retrial of Jodi Arias. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Judge Sherry Stephens also ruled that the case will remain in Phoenix.

Arias was convicted of murder in May in the killing of her boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008. The jury in the case failed to reach a decision regarding sentencing her to the death penalty. In accordance with Arizona law, prosecutors may pursue a second penalty phase with a different jury. If a verdict is not reached, the death penalty will no longer be included as an option and Arias would be sentenced by a judge.

Stephens is quoted by the AP as writing in the ruling published on Friday, “The court expects there will be significantly less media coverage of the case during the retrial of the penalty phase…Jurors with preconceived notions about the appropriate sentence will be excused.”
