Florida – The principal of a Florida middle school has sided with the angered mother of a student who made the honor roll with a C and D on his report card. As reported by Good Morning America, Principal Kim Anderson of Pasco Middle School in Dade City, Fla. recently commented on the situation following reports of Beth Tillack becoming outraged over the school’s standards and system of assessment.
Anderson is quoted in the report as stating, “I do agree with her… I feel it’s important for students to progress by meeting standards. We measure them by standards, they know if they’ve met them or not. Sometimes grades don’t always indicate that.”
Tillack’s seventh grade son was placed on the honor roll after making four A’s, a C, and a D. In accordance with the Pasco Middle School honor roll system, which uses weighted grade point averages, he fell above the 3.15 honor roll requirement with a 3.16 average.
Tillack is quoted as stating, “The bottom line is there’s nothing honorable about making a D… I was not happy, because how can I get my child to study for a test when he thinks he’s done enough?”
According to the report, Anderson has stated that she would encourage teachers to more closely review report cards to help provide a more accurate representation of progress.
