Honolulu – Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie signed a bill on Wednesday legalizing gay marriage. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the signing comes over two decades after a national gay marriage debate was sparked on the island by two women filing for a marriage license. The Hawaii Supreme Court ruled in 1993 that their rights to equal protection were violated by their not being allowed to wed.

Hawaii is now reportedly positioning itself for an increase in tourism as the new law is set to go into effect. Tourists and same-sex couples who reside in the state will be allowed to marry beginning December 2.

Abercrombie is quoted by the AP as stating on Tuesday following the passage of the bill by the Senate, “In Hawaii, we believe in fairness, justice and human equality…Today, we celebrate our diversity defining us rather than dividing us.”
