Alabama – The University of Alabama has reportedly built the largest Greek system in the country with a $202 million boom in housing construction over the last decade. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), some are claiming the massive expansion adds to the power of the controversial Greek system which has been riddled with racism and electioneering claims.

According to school officials financing for 30 houses that are being expanded or constructed comes from public debt provided loans that private groups will repay.

Francis Viselli, whose family once unsuccessfully challenged the Greek structure at Alabama, is quoted by the AP as stating, “Are we building more infrastructure to create the same thought processes, the same sense of power and control as in the past?”

University officials say construction on Greek housing is only a small percentage of money spent on building projects occurring in conjunction with enrollment increases of thousands of students over the last ten years.

Alumnae Jennifer Meehan of Gamma Phi Beta, who is a South Carolina attorney and president of the chapter’s housing corporation, is quoted as stating of her group, “We’ve had record numbers. We had the largest new-member class in the country… We really think this will be a home away from home.”
