Philippines – As the scale of devastation becomes more evident, survivors of the deadly typhoon in the Philippines are pleading for aid. As reported by AFP, survivors had become more desperate for assistance as response efforts grew to overwhelming measures Monday following the destruction of Super Typhoon Haiyan on Friday.

The typhoon, which may have killed more than 10,000 people on the Philippines, is stated to possibly be the worst recorded natural disaster in the country’s history.

High school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, is quoted by AFP as stating, “Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families… People are becoming violent. They are looting business establishments, the malls, just to find food, rice and milk…. I am afraid that in one week, people will be killing from hunger.”

UNICEF Philippines representative Tomoo Hozumi, is further quoted as stating of response efforts, “We are rushing to get critical supplies to children who are bearing the brunt of this crisis… Reaching the worst-affected areas is very difficult. But we are working around the clock.”
