Kentucky – A judge has ruled that a terminally ill Catholic priest was fit to stand trial on allegations of sexual abuse. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a doctor who evaluated Rev. James Schook gave testimony Thursday regarding his health, stating that although he is ill, he would be able to endure a criminal trial.
Dr. Amy Trivette, a psychiatrist at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center, who evaluated Schook in July, is quoted by the AP as stating that Schook “is able to rationally participate in his defense.”
Schook has terminal skin cancer and is suffering from other health complications.
The 65-year-old Catholic priest was indicted on seven counts of sodomy in 2011. His trial has been set by Jefferson County Circuit Judge Mitch Perry for March 31.
