Honolulu – Hawaii has begun a debate over a proposal that would legalize gay marriage in the state, making it the 15th to do so in the U.S. As reported by Reuters, the measure was taken up during a special session called by the governor, as over 1,800 individuals signed up to speak to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The proposal would repeal a voter-approved constitutional amendment that banned same-sex marriage.

Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie, who appeared as the first witness supporting the proposal, is quoted as stating, “Our whole focus has been on trying to accommodate the First Amendment here with respect to people’s religious rights, and that’s been done in good faith.

Hawaii currently allows civil unions.
