Greece – A Roma couple has been charged in the abduction of a child dubbed the “blonde angel.” As reported by AFP, the 39-year-old man and his 40-year-old wife, may be sentenced to between 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted on charges of abducting the child.

The couple was arrested after the young girl was found in a Roma camp on Wednesday and DNA confirmed that she was not related to them. The couple claims the child’s biological mother gave her up because she was unable to raise her.

Marietta Palavra, an attorney for the couple, is quoted by AFP as stating, “We’re talking about a woman who could not raise this child and who gave it to the couple in 2009 through a third party shortly after her birth.” Her colleague Konstantinos Katsavos, is further quoted as adding, “There has been no kidnapping, no robbery, no trafficking.”

Greek authorities are reportedly working with Interpol to trace the biological parents of the young girl.
