New Jersey – The governor of New Jersey is expected to appeal a judge’s ruling regarding the legality of same sex marriage in the state. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Gov. Chris Christie’s administration announced the appeal plans hours after a state trial judge ruled that marriage between same-sex couples would be legal on October 21.

Judge Mary Jacobson ruled in favor of a group of same-sex couples and gay rights advocates who filed a lawsuit in July against the state saying it was blocking the rights of gay couples unconstitutionally following a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, which permitted the federal government to grant marriage benefits to same-sex couples.

Civil unions for same-sex couples are currently permitted in the state of New Jersey.
