Nairobi, Kenya – A Kenyan official is attributing the recent collapse of the Westgate Mall to action taken by the military against hostage takers during a terrorist siege. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the top ranking official told the news source that soldiers were responsible for the mall collapse, but did not specify what had been used to cause it.

According to the official, Kenyan troops fired rocket-propelled grenades inside the mall during the siege. At least a reported 67 people were killed and several others injured in the mass shooting that led to military forces being called to take action.

The attack at the mall reportedly began on Sep. 21 and lasted until Sept. 24. It was stated to have been carried out by 12-15 al-Shabab militants, some of which were killed in the incident. Fears remain that some of the militants managed to escape. Investigations are ongoing.
