New York – The New York City Council has voted to create an NYPD watchdog in spite of objections from Mayor Michael Bloomberg. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Bloomberg purported that the Council’s decision Thursday will put the safety of the city in jeopardy.

The outside oversight will make it easier for people to file racial profiling claims against the police department, a move Bloomberg says will make it “harder for our police officers to protect New Yorkers and continue to drive down crime.”

Bloomberg is quoted by the AP as saying in a statement, “Make no mistake: The communities that will feel the most negative impacts of these bills will be minority communities across our city, which have been the greatest beneficiaries of New York City’s historic crime reductions.”

The vote follows a recent federal judge ruling that acts being carried out under the NYPD’s stop and frisk program were discriminatory against minorities.
