West Hempfield Township, PA — A teenager is lucky to be alive after her SUV careened into a culvert, trapping her for almost 18 hours before being spotted by a nearby resident. The SUV accident occurred sometime between 11 and 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, in West Hempfield Township, reports NBC News.

According to police, it is believed that 18-year-old Brooke Spence of Mount Joy had crossed the center line in her 2002 Dodge Durango and struck a utility pole. The SUV was then launched about 20 feet into a culvert below the road and flipped over onto its roof.

Spence laid there trapped throughout the night and most of the day until around 5:07 p.m., when a resident near the accident scene, Brad Shearer, noticed the vehicle.

Responding emergency crews transported Spence to Lancaster General Hospital where she is reportedly in fair condition.

Police do not think speed or alcohol were factors in the wreck.

Investigations are underway.
